This General Conference is extremely important to the future direction of The United Methodist Church and its inclusion of ALL people. We ask everyone to be in prayer that the approved legislation of this General Conference can help to move our United Methodist denomination forward with love and grace for ALL people. Walker Chapel has been rooted in the Wesleyan tradition for over 150 years. This tradition is shaped by the love that God holds for all people. As a reconciling congregation, Walker Chapel is committed to the full inclusion of all people in the life of the church. Walker Chapel is an intentionally safe place for LGBTQ+ persons and allies to be in worship and service together . We welcome everyone regardless of age, race, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, physical condition, sexual orientation, ethnic background, or economic situation, in keeping with sacred scriptures, the Creativity of our universal God, the saving Grace of Jesus Christ, and the continuous presence of the Holy Spirit. There are many gifts found in the Book of Discipline and our Social Principles that propel us towards deeper faith and social justice, yet we admit we do not agree with the current harmful language regarding human sexuality and the limitations placed upon the full inclusion of LGBTQIA+ persons. We believe our future is one of recognizing the fullness of God’s wide welcome to ALL people. Therefore, it is our hope that 2024 General Conference will take the following actions: Removal of the Harmful Language: We pray for the removal of all provisions in the Book of Discipline that hinder the full inclusion and participation of LGBTQ+ persons in the life of the church. Revised Social Principles: The proposed new Social Principles are more succinct, globally relevant, and theologically and biblically grounded. We celebrate that it also removes the harmful incompatibility language. Worldwide Regionalization: This plan would create regional conferences around the world that will each have equal power to pass certain types of legislation within their prospective regions. This will allow us to stay connected in ministry but become more regional in governance. In the coming weeks you will hear a lot about The United Methodist Church in the news. Please know that regardless of the outcomes in Charlotte, Walker Chapel will continue to be committed tot he inclusion of all persons in the church. Walker Chapel has sent a letter to the Virginia Delegation to the General Conference, encouraging them to do all they have to advance removal of harmful language, revising the Social Principles, and move toward worldwide regionalization.
Volunteers are needed for Community Assistance in April. On the second Saturday of each month, Walker Chapel and Mount Olivet provide our friends and neighbors with much-needed food. The next food distribution will be on Saturday, April 13 , and will be hosted at Mount Olivet. In this study we hope to answer these questions and others in broad strokes as we describe our United Methodist Church. We will consider to how United Methodists live and think as followers of Jesus Christ. The United Methodist Church possesses the characteristics of many other Christian traditions but has its own distinctive profile. Our denomination combines knowledge and vital piety, believing that serious theological reflection and spiritual practices are both part of the Christian life. United Methodists link personal and social holiness, expecting high personal integrity and deep concern for social justice. We are both evangelical and sacramental, showing concern for people who have not yet accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and honoring the transforming power of Baptism and Holy Communion. We welcome people with many different theological perspectives. Finally, United Methodists are both local and connectional, expressing our faith in local congregations, regional associations, and global missions, so that we might do more together than any of us could do separately.

Many opportunities to worship with us this Holy Week! Walker Chapel is hosting a Maundy Thursday service on Thursday, March 28, at 7:30 PM with friends from Mount Olivet. On Good Friday, we will be journeying through The Stations of the Cross. This began as a remembrance that pilgrims had when they were retracing Jesus’ final steps in Jerusalem up to the hill where He was crucified. Wanting to share that practice and experience with people who couldn’t make the trip to Jerusalem, they created local stations of meditation that became itself a tradition. Artwork will be on display in the Chapel Sanctuary on Good Friday (March 29) from 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM and Holy Saturday (March 30) from 12:00 PM - 7:00 PM. Dr. King’s message is rooted in the fundamental truth that to overcome darkness, we must introduce light. In the Gospel of John, Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). It is in acknowledging Jesus as the light that drives out darkness that we find hope, inspiration, and a transformative power. Just as darkness cannot persist in the presence of light, hatred cannot endure in the face of genuine love. The transformative power of love is at the core of Christianity, exemplified by Jesus’ sacrificial love on the cross. As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect this divine love in our lives, extending it even to those who may harbor hatred. In the journey towards justice and equality, Dr. King’s message serves as a guiding light. It challenges us to respond to injustice not with revenge, but with love; not with bitterness, but with a commitment to understanding and reconciliation. Through the lens of faith, we recognize that only by emulating the love of Christ can we effectively combat the darkness of prejudice and discrimination. We are having a great start of the school year at Walker Chapel Preschool! Our curriculum is enhanced by daily craft projects, exploring music and instruments, science experiments and gross motor skill movement classes. Sunday, August 21th -- 5pm, the Tema USA Choir in concert at Walker Chapel! Followed by food and fun! Tema Choir USA, Inc. takes its roots from famous Ghanaian choral music group, Tema Youth Choir. Following the relocation of the founder of Tema Youth Choir, Ebenezer A. Allotey, to the United States of America from Ghana, Tema ChoirUSA was founded to sustain and build upon its sister choir's praiseworthy feats. Founded in November 2019 under the direction of Ebenezer A. Allotey, Tema Choir USA is a diverse volunteer, non-auditioned choir with a mission to create community, foster unity and build a better world through music. Comprised of singers representing a wide range of age, religious beliefs and cultural backgrounds, Tema Choir USA uses choral music as a vehicle for bringing communities together in order to promote and create social change. Tema Choir USA is based in Woodbridge, Virginia and regularly holds at least four performances a year to raise funds for those less privileged both locally and nationally.Button -

Tomorrow is Potato Drop Day at Walker Chapel and Tom is ready with the forklift! In partnership with @societyofstandrew and Cherrydale UMC we are looking forward to bringing the community together to educate participants about hunger and the amount of perfectly edible food that goes to waste in America. Join us tomorrow at 8am at the Chapel! We will be receiving 18 pallets of potatoes to distribute to area Food Kitchens and Pantries. We are still in need of volunteers to breakdown 50 pound bags into 10 pound bags. We will also need assistance loading the bags into the trucks of the Food Kitchens and Pantries who will be picking up the food. We will also have some cleanup that occurs during the event and at the end of event. If you have any of the following items at home please bring them the day of the event: work gloves, brooms, and/ or rakes. Today we returned to inside, in-person worship with this Call to Worship from Lay Leader James Wright: God, our spiritual mother and spiritual father in one, 🙏 We gather in this beloved space to bring witness to our faith. We’ve come in each of our imperfect ways praying to release our discomforts and to find nourishment and personal renewal in your presence. 🙏 We pray for forgiveness when our faith has faltered. 🙏 We pray that by your grace and through your mercy we will be guided by the Spirit to renew this church on North Glebe Road, ministering to our community near and far. 🙏 We pray for those who want to be with us but can’t; we pray for those captive to anxiety and we pray for those whose health is fragile. Walker Chapel's Proud History
Located on North Glebe Road in Arlington, VA, the congregation's original building was built in 1871, six years after the end of the Civil War, and only a year after the end of Arlington County’s occupation by the Union Army. A single room frame structure with a small belfry and basement, seated near the upper part of the historic cemetery, Walker Chapel was one of the earliest church buildings in the area. A new structure was built in 1903, with further additions taking place in 1952 and 1954.
We are very proud of our unique history of both
change and tradition.
