Charge Conference

Pastors are appointed or reappointed each year at their respective Annual Conferences to a pastoral charge.  A charge may be a single church, like Walker Chapel, or a group of small churches, sometimes referred to as a circuit.  To maintain the connectional nature of the United Methodist Church, charges are grouped into Districts, which are geographical divisions of their Annual Conferences.  Districts are supervised by clergy superintendents who are appointed by the presiding bishop of the Annual Conference.  The United Methodist Book of Discipline requires that a Charge Conference be conducted annually.  The District Superintendent, or his/her appointed representative, presides of this meeting.  The businessof the Charge Conference usually includes:

  • A review of the ministries being conducted to fulfill the church's mission.
  • A review of the church's mission.
  • Adoption of goals and objectives recommended by the Church Council.
  • Establishment of the pastor's compensation for the upcoming year as recommended by the Church Council.
  • Acceptance of all or part of the financial apportionments imposed by the District and the Annual Conference for the upcoming year.
  • Submission of reports of the pastor, the Board of Trustees, and the annual audit of church finances.
  • Election of church officers for the upcoming years nominated by the Nominations and Personnel Committee and approved by the Church Council.
