Church Council

Our Church Council is the governing body of the church and the "town center" of all the church's activities.  All committees report to the Church Council and look to it for guidance.  The Council leads the ministries and business administration of Walker Chapel.  it sets the direction and objectives; initiates and authorizes plans, budgets and programs; and determines policy.  It provides for the planning and implementing of Walker Chapel's programs and ministries, and oversees the administrative details of operating the Church.

The Council's roles and responsibilities include:

  • Serving as the executive agent for the Charge Conference, directing the ministries and business administration of congregation life.
  • Establishing a process for developing short and long-term plans to meet goals and objectives and evaluate ministry programs.
  • Establishing policies and authorizing actions to execute ministry programs developed by the committee chairpersons.
  • Providing for Walker Chapel's financial needs, physical facilities and legal obligations; and establishing annual budgets on recommendations of the Finance Committee.
  • Encouraging the congregation to participate in the ministries and programs of the church.
  • Recommending to the Charge Conference the compensation, housing needs and benefits for the pastor and other staff members.
  • Filling vacancies occurring among the lay officers of the church.
  • Ensuring adequate provision for the financial needs of the church.

Members of the Church Council are nominated by the Committee on Nominations and elected by the annual Charge Conference.  There are about 25 members of the Council, including representatives of the church's program ministries as well as the following persons:

  • the chairperson of the Church Council
  • the Lay Leader
  • the chairperson of the Pastor/Staff-Parish Relations Committee
  • the presidents of the United Methodist Woman and United Methodist Men
